I’m Vivian, and I created Português de Verdade because I believe in the power of language to connect people.
Growing up, I lived with the silence of a “language/culture gap.” My grandparents were immigrants who arrived in Brazil in the ’50s. And even though we had a bridge language, I didn’t know their songs, I didn’t get their jokes, and I didn’t know their story.
And guess what? The internet’s viral videos only taught me a stereotypical view of their language and culture that had NOTHING to do with who they really were.
Today, that gap has become a wall. My grandmother now has dementia; she has forgotten her Portuguese and returned entirely to her native tongue. Our chance to bond is gone.
I created Português de Verdade because I want to give you the keys to connection while that door is still open. My mission is to give you the autonomy to express yourself freely, so you can stop being a “gringo/a” and start feeling like one of us—not what the internet says we’re about, but what really makes Brazilians, Brazilians.
